Philosophy
Defining The Unplace is doomed to fail, for it is an evolving space without a simple purpose. It is all that much of society and business advisory tells you not to be: chaotic, ambiguous, partially confusing and without a clear aim to promote or sell. It is the kind of space that acts as a mirror of what I’d like to see more of in the world: a place to be, as imperfect, messy and human as we are. Above all, it therefore acts as an antithesis to a polished, efficient, AI-optimized world.
For a start, The Unplace will mostly be populated with art. Art, thought collections and different experiments created and curated by me: articles, poems, short stories, rap snippets and songs. Over time, I, as an individual, don’t want to be at the center of this project. I would like to showcase different art; I would like for this to be a space that anyone with interesting ideas and creations can make use of. I would like to foster collaborations between science, tech and art folks. An online space to bring people and their creations together – and potentially create an offline community as well.
Behind The Unplace
Hey, I’m Paul.
I created the Unplace after going through fundamental personal shifts. My vision was and is to give space to much of what I see missing around me and, in the world – from my limited perspective.
I’m from Austria, have lived in South America, Northern Africa and traveled quite a bit across Europe and India. I studied economics and bioinformatics and peeked into the neurotechnology space, but much of my change has been about returning to what has really always called me: creative expression, mainly in the form of writing. Over time, this expanded into other explorations like rap. I am still highly interested in science and technology – if pursued consciously and with a bigger picture in mind.
I am a curious, chaotic and free soul. At this point in time, I’ve realized and accepted that most of mainstream societal conceptions of a life don’t work and will never work for me. I always had a certain allergy toward authority and rigid hierarchies, but only recently did I give myself permission to truly go my own way – and see where it leads. This whole space reflects that, and I hope that it can become a meaningful, colorful, diverse, creative space. One where exploration and the quest of a shared societal sense of purpose is at the center – not profit.
I occasionally do some freelancing (which can take different forms). If you like what you find around here, feel free to contact me via the contact form. Also, if you’d like to contribute to the Unplace – for now especially in terms of photos or visuals, but I’m open to ideas – send me a message.
